Highly recommended for small Venice lovers. We bought this book when my son was 2 and we were preparing to move to Venice (from the United States). At first some of the historical facts were over his head but he loved to look at the illustrations of the boats and buildings and Venetians going about their lives in this magical city. At 8 years old he still enjoys the book, and has become interested in some of the little informational tidbits, for example “Four hundred bridges span the 177 canals.” The book also features many of the city’s most important landmarks.
The illustrations have a charming, vintage feel (published originally in 1961) and the quirky and friendly characters featured throughout the book will make Venice approachable to readers of all ages.
